Professional learning programs for teachers were provided at school and cluster level, the most significant of these relating to the implementation of the Essential Learnings Framework.
In each region, workshops in positive behaviour support were provided for relief teachers through the Relief Teachers and Those Returning to the Workforce After Extended Leave project.
Programs for staff other than teachers included:
- the School Administration Initiative Project (SAIP), which provided targeted training for clerical/administrative staff in schools;
- occupational health and safety training for school attendants; and
- training for teacher aides under the Teacher Aide Learning and Recognition Framework (TALRF).
The Corporate Services Division continued implementing the Achieving Together program to support the professional learning needs of staff. Similar programs operated in the Office of Post-Compulsory Education and Training and the State Library. Work commenced on a leadership development program.
Departmental staff continued to participate in a range of external programs including those provided by the Tasmanian Training Consortium.

Workplace diversity programs
Management of workplace diversity activities continued. Workplace diversity initiatives were incorporated into other departmental policies, plans and programs (such as equity programs) and organisational units’ business plans. Learning Together goals and value statements guide the development of these programs.
Employee participation in industrial relations matters
Unions and employees were represented on a range of departmental consultative committees relating to professional and operational matters. Specific employee consultative mechanisms, including a peak union-department consultative group, were established for the implementation of Essential Learnings for All. Where significant change is to occur, the Public Sector Union Wages Agreement and the Teacher Nexus Agreement require consultation with employees and unions.
Internal grievances procedures
Published grievance procedures are available to employees and clients, including parents. During 2004-05, 74 new grievance cases were submitted to the Grievance and Investigations Unit. Twenty six cases were still being resolved at 30 June 2005. The Grievances and Investigations Unit continued to manage the process of good character clearances for schools and the child care industry.
