Legislation administered, enacted and amended

Significant changes to legislation

The Archives Act 1983 was amended to ensure that records of all public bodies are covered by the legislation and to clarify the status of other state and local government organisations. The amended Act also ensures that government organisations keep appropriate records of their business; formalises recordkeeping guidelines developed by the State Archivist; and clarifies both the powers, duties and responsibilities of the State Archivist and the way in which records out of government custody are recovered. The amendments took effect in May 2005.

Amendments to the Vocational Education and Training Act 1994 provided for the establishment of the Tasmanian Learning and Skills Authority on 1 January 2005. The new authority replaced the Tasmanian State Training Authority (TASTA) and assumed responsibility for vocational education and training as well as for senior secondary education, higher education and adult and community education.

Amendments to the Tasmanian Building and Construction Industry Training Fund Act 1990 provided for the establishment of a 10 member board of management from 1 March 2005. The amendments also increased the threshold value of leviable works and broadened the scope of works to include, amongst other things, repair and maintenance works.

Legislation enacted

Youth Participation in Education and Training (Guaranteeing Futures) Act 2005

New legislation was passed in 2005 to improve the transition from school to work or further education and training for young people completing Year 10. The Act will be progressively enacted from 2007 to 2008, supporting the range of initiatives detailed in Tasmania: A State of Learning, the state’s strategy for post-Year 10 education and training.
