Secretary's letter

The Hon. David Bartlett MHA
Minister for Education
Parliament House
HOBART Tasmania 7000

Dear Minister

In accordance with the requirements of section 36 of the Tasmanian State Service Act 2000 and section 27 of the Financial Management and Audit Act 1990, I am pleased to submit to you this report of the activities of the Department of Education for the financial year 2005-06.

This year, the department continued to focus on ensuring that all Tasmanians have the
opportunity to participate in quality learning at all stages of life-in the early years, at school and as adults. Our increased emphasis on supporting the learning and development of children in the years before they start school is part of a whole of government approach to nurturing our very young. Schools and colleges continued to work to meet the individual learning needs of all students, and through the Guaranteeing Futures strategy, support them on their journey from school to further education, training and employment. Innovative approaches to service provision such as the Huon Learning and Information Network Centre have continued to expand the range of learning opportunities available for adult Tasmanians.

Skills development to support business and industry was another major focus for the department. We have established a range of innovative strategies to develop a skilled workforce that will support and sustain Tasmania’s economic growth.

This report highlights the significant contributions made in meeting the education, training and information needs of Tasmania’s people, and I would like to thank all those who have contributed to it and the work and initiatives it describes.
