In keeping with the Community Knowledge Network strategy, the necessary changes to the structural arrangements are being progressed. Adult and Community Learning Services now encompasses online access centres, adult and community education and branch libraries across the state.
The services and resources of the Archives Office of Tasmania and Heritage Collections of the State Library of Tasmania have been amalgamated and are the responsibility of the Heritage and Tasmanian Information Services. This service will provide access to the millions of items in the combined collections of the Archives Office of Tasmania and Heritage Collections of the State Library of Tasmania.
Work is continuing on the establishment of the Virtual Library and, in particular, on the development of a new TALIS Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). The new catalogue features an interface which allows clients to search and browse the State Library's catalogue as quickly and easily as searching the web. The upgraded catalogue will be an integral part of the Virtual Library.
In keeping with the philosophy of the Community Knowledge Network strategy, a service network for the 21st Century continues to be expanded. There has been a successful trial of the new service delivery model for small communities, with a branch library and online access centre operating as an integrated unit to deliver a blend of information, lifelong learning and library services. The latest of these developments is the Bridgewater Library + Online Access Centre which opened in its new location in February 2007.
The Library of the 21st Century places a major emphasis on developing electronic services as an additional service to physical services, or as an alternative choice for clients. Progress to date includes undertaking a review of reference and lending services and their collections. A range of projects to enhance service delivery options and to develop clear policy positions have been completed. These projects include the development of a telephone help-line for access to library services, guidelines for purchasing electronic resources and a detailed model for reference service delivery options.
