Our progress

Learning Services have been working closely with their schools planning a number of literacy initiatives to support schools to achieve their literacy targets. Some of the initiatives include:

  • Experienced and skilled teachers working as literacy coaches to support schools in achieving their literacy goals, working alongside teachers in schools and sharing resources, ideas and strategies with a specific focus on literacy improvement.
  • Professional learning for schools to enable more effective use of both system and individual student monitoring data to plan intervention strategies.
  • Accessing literacy experts external to the DoE, either for a sustained period to work in schools, or as a stimulus to professional learning.

A number of intervention strategies and approaches to further support schools to achieve the goals outlined in the National Literacy and Numeracy Plan were continued during 2006-07.

The Flying Start program, which provided an additional allocation of staff to all early childhood classrooms, assisted all students achieve appropriate literacy and numeracy skills.

Trained facilitators delivered professional learning statewide using the First Steps resources designed to provide a strategic whole-school approach to improving students' literacy outcomes. Teachers used the First Steps resources to address literacy challenges in reading, writing, speaking and listening.

The Reading Recovery early literacy intervention strategy provided intensive individual help for Year 1 students with low level literacy skills. Students involved in the program received one-to-one instruction on a daily basis from trained Reading Recovery tutors.
