> What has changed and why?
What has changed and why?The Tasmanian Curriculum has been refined due to teacher and public concern about the complexity of the Essential Learnings curriculum. It is being introduced in schools from 2008 as part of the Student at the Centre Plan. The curriculum includes some familiar areas such as English, Mathematics and Science and some new areas such as Vocational and Applied Learning. Some important features of the Essential Learnings Framework have been retained. Further details of what has been retained or refined are available. Key features of the refined Tasmanian Curriculum include:
Details of each of the curriculum areas, thinking and ICTs can be accessed by Department of Education teachers. Will the Tasmanian curriculum be reviewed? The curriculum will be reviewed to reflect changing needs and priorities in education and wider society. As teachers and schools implement the refined curriculum from 2008, examples of the ‘curriculum in action’ will help to improve it for all Tasmanian schools and students. How does the Tasmanian curriculum reflect national initiatives? The Tasmanian Curriculum directly incorporates the National Statements of Learning for English, Mathematics, Science and Civics and Citizenship. Tasmanian students participate in the National Assessment Program in the agreed additional areas of reading, writing and numeracy and ICTs (information and communication technologies). The Department of Education works closely with the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations to ensure that Tasmanian schools can both meet national obligations and provide all Tasmanian students with a quality education that supports state and national curriculum priorities.
