Below is an excerpt from the end of year school report of one of the Grade 7 students, Nathan. Nathan is a student with severe Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). His report indicates a successful start to high school. The story that follows explores the factors that contributed to this ‘good beginning’ at secondary school.

Nathan has adapted well to his new school environment and is an accepted and valued member of 7G. He has shown an increasing interest in interacting with students in the class and they have enjoyed being part of the achievements he has made this year. I am very pleased with the varied program that we have been able to offer Nathan… It has meant that Nathan has been able to access specialised programs to meet his needs as well as being involved with all the important social and learning opportunities that we have been able to provide. [Teacher aide] has also been an important part of Nathan’s successful transition to high school, providing a familiar link between the two school environments. I wish Nathan a very happy and successful time on his continued journey at [school name] and in the future. It has been my privilege to be part of this in 2005.

This story draws heavily on a reflective piece written by Jo, the student’s class teacher. It also contains thoughts from the principal and the support teacher.
