Kirsten's story

Developing Essential Learnings - aligned Individual Education Planning (IEP) from the beginning and using it in an inclusive classroom

Where do you start with a student who is new to the system, has significant learning needs and for whom there is no documentation and no supports yet in place?

This was the teacher's dilemma at the start of 2005. This dilemma formed the basis of her action research question and her project work uncovers the evolutionary journey she took in learning about her student and working towards a more inclusive classroom program for him. Because so little was known about George and because he had never been to school before, initially much of his learning was separate from that of his classmates. The teacher used all her resources to gather as much information as she possibly could about him, carefully developed a targeted IEP and found she was able to include George much more effectively in the whole class learning program.
