Forth Primary School

Background

Forth Primary School has a population of 177 students, a staffing allocation of 9.4 teachers, 4 Teacher Assistants (TAs) and 7 classes - Prep. to Grade 6 and a Kindergarten.

This is a story is about a small school looking for ways to creatively use their human resources to maximise opportunities for student engagement with learning, in particular for students with a disability. The project was undertaken by the principal, year 5 / 6 teachers, the teacher of Indonesian and the Teacher Assistants (TAs).

The collaborative approach was suggested and originally led by the school principal. Her role included:

  • supporting the team by providing them with relevant professional learning about teams
  • using the Index for Inclusion: Developing Learning and Participation in Schools (IFI) to gain an insight to the current collaborative status of the school
  • leading initial team meetings
  • resourcing and supporting the team through adequate provision of planning time.
