Statement of school purpose, beliefs and values

The statement aligns well with aspects of best practice that are described in the Supportive School Communities Policy Framework (2003) and by the Index for Inclusion (Ainscow, 2002).

  • We believe that in our concern for the development of the child we should recognise that all personal aspects –  physical, emotional, social, intellectual, moral and spiritual – are inter-related.

  • We believe children learn, in the context of a supportive and secure environment, where people are seen to demonstrate care and concern for each other through good relationships, by the words spoken and by the actions taken.

  • We believe children should be empowered to be part of the democratic decision-making that reflects the culture of our school.

  • We believe that children should develop knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that will enable them to participate fully as active and informed citizens.

  • We believe our learning programs must reflect the capacity for children to understand and manage continual change.

  • We believe that best results are achieved if staff work in collaborative teams towards agreed goals.

  • We believe that as professionals we are on going learners and have a commitment to regular professional development.

  • We believe that we must continue to foster a positive partnership with parents and the broader community.

The Supportive School Communities Policy Framework and the Index for Inclusion  are useful tools for schools to use when reflecting on or auditing their practice. Norwood Primary School prepared a table to show the comparison between their Statement of purpose, beliefs and values and the documents.

Read the comparative table.

The high fives

The school’s Statement of purposes, beliefs and values is translated for everyday use into the school’s high fives. The high fivesare referred to regularly and guide the everyday actions of students, staff and school community. Even the youngest Kinders can tell you about the high fives! The high fives are:

Being fair

Being safe

Being cooperative

Being considerate

Being good
