The Tasmanian Curriculum - Information for parents

Print this page

The Tasmanian curriculum sets the direction for what students learn in government schools. The curriculum outlines:

  • The areas and subjects taught
  • The knowledge, skills and understanding students will learn in each area
  • The standards and stages of achievement required for students in each area. Teachers use these to measure, assess and report your child’s progress and plan the next steps in their learning.

Guided by the framework of the Tasmanian Curriculum, schools are free to plan and organise teaching and learning in the way that best meets the needs of their students and community.

The Tasmanian Curriculum is organised into seven main areas:

  • English – literacy (including LOTE – Languages Other Than English)
  • Mathematics – numeracy
  • Science
  • Society and History
  • Health and wellbeing
  • Arts
  • Vocational and Applied Learning (VAL)

Skills in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Thinking are developed in all seven areas.

Schools are required to fulfil the requirements outlined in the Curriculum Guidance Statement. This ensures that state assessment and reporting commitments to parents and national agreements about student learning and assessment can be fully met. All schools are involved in regional and local moderation processes to help ensure that student assessment is fair and reliable.

Schools implementing the Tasmanian Curriculum will be also meeting requirements of the National Statements of Learning and well prepared for the emerging National Curriculum.

The Tasmanian Curriculum is based on an agreed set of Values, Purposes and Goals refined through extensive consultation with teachers.

Monthly updates on the Tasmanian Curriculum are available from the Department of Education’s public website.

Teachers can access support in the areas of the curriculum from the four regional Learning Services and staff from the state wide curriculum team. Extensive teacher resources are also available from the Department of Education’s online eCentre (Teacher Log in required).
