North-West Schools to Receive UpgradesSchools in Tasmania’s North-West will benefit from improvements worth more than $578,000 as part of a $2.475 million State Government program. Member for Braddon, Bryan Green, said today that 29 North-West Government schools received funding under the Department of Education’s 2008-09 minor works and essential maintenance program. “The program allows schools to apply for grants up to $50,000. Schools also contribute towards the cost of their projects,” Mr Green said. “The funding now also provides for projects which support the State Government’s Greenhouse Action Plan.” Mr Green said that projects included: § Building alterations including wheelchair access, grounds improvements to the driveway and parking areas at King Island District High School ($45,620) § Roof maintenance at Forest Primary School ($50,000) § Building repairs and floor coverings at Acton School ($40,000) § Window maintenance at Devonport High School ($17,680) § Playground facilities at Railton Primary School ($18,200) § Fencing at Riana Primary School ($21,000) § Drainage repairs and grounds improvement at Nixon Street Primary School ($22,500) § Roof repairs at Strahan Primary School ($21,000) § Air conditioning and heating upgrade at Table Cape Primary School ($15,000) § Building alterations to office space at Ulverstone High School ($50,000) § Building alterations and maintenance at Mountain Heights School ($21,000) Mr Green said that the State Government was committed to providing learning environments that meet the needs of teaching and learning in the 21st century. “In the 2008-09 State Budget, we’re spending $41.8 million to redevelop schools, libraries and other Department of Education buildings across the State. This is part of a four-year, $162.87 million program,” he said. “This $2.475 million minor work and essential maintenance program will further improve our school facilities.”
