Refurbishments for Northern schools

Northern Tasmanian schools will share in more than $680,000 in refurbishments as part of a $2.475 million State Government program.

Premier and Minister for Education and Skills, David Bartlett, said today that 45 Northern Tasmanian Government schools received a total of $683,540 under the Department of Education’s 2008-09 minor works and essential maintenance program.

“Under the program, schools are invited to apply for grants of up to $50,000. Schools also contribute to the cost of their projects,” Mr Bartlett said.

“Funding now also provides for projects which support the State Government’s Greenhouse Action Plan.”

Mr Bartlett said that projects included:

§  The construction of a fence around the sports ground at Bicheno Primary School ($4900)

§  Building alterations to install sound-proofing at Deloraine High School ($42,000)

§  Window and playground facilities maintenance at the Early Childhood Intervention Services in Launceston ($26,890)

§  Building maintenance at Brooks High School ($30,000)

§  Toilet refurbishment and replacement of lights and heaters at Bridport Primary ($10,040)

§  Building alterations and maintenance to a covered walkway at Queechy High School ($50,000)

Mr Bartlett said that the State Government was committed to providing modern learning environments where students could thrive.

“We’ve committed $41.8 million in the 2008-09 State Budget, to redevelop schools, libraries and other Department of Education buildings across the State. It’s part as part of a four-year, $162.87 million program,” he said.

“This $2.475 million minor work and essential maintenance program will further improve school facilities."
