Tasmania’s Top Students Honoured

The State’s most outstanding Tasmanian Certificate of Education achievers were honoured at a special prize ceremony today.

Minister for Workplace Relations, Lisa Singh, congratulated the 50 students on their fine achievements at the Tasmanian Qualifications Authority presentation at the University of Tasmania in Hobart.

Certificates were presented to 34 students with a high tertiary entrance rank and 16 students who demonstrated outstanding excellence in a Vocational Education and Training program taken as part of their senior secondary studies.

“Sincere congratulations must go to these extremely talented and hard-working students on achieving academic excellence in their chosen field,” Ms Singh said.

“This is testament to the outstanding, inspiring work being carried out by teachers throughout Tasmania, who have supported and contributed to these students’ excellent results.”

Ms Singh said that the students had exciting, challenging and varied careers ahead of them.

“I’m delighted to help celebrate the performance of these bright young Tasmanians – the highest achievers in the State in 2008,” Ms Singh said.

“Recognising both outstanding vocational education and training and outstanding academic achievements really demonstrates the breadth of skills being developed in senior secondary studies across the State.

“This will only be further enhanced with the new education bodies, the Tasmanian Academy, the Tasmanian Polytechnic and the Tasmanian Skills Institute, which will deliver quality education and training students from 2009.

“Today’s ceremony is a fantastic opportunity to highlight how our schools and students are committed to Tasmania’s future, and the role young people can play in developing opportunities for economic and social growth in Australia.”
