The Archives Office is set up under the Archives Act to:

• provide a formal and transparent framework for recordkeeping across State and local government organisations and regulate the retention and disposal of their records
• provide facilities for the preservation of the State’s archives, including records of non-government organisations and individuals
• provide facilities and services to enable public access to the State’s archives
