In the Department of Education, Tasmania statements of duties specify the formal qualifications and mandatory requirements that a person must have to undertake assigned duties. Essential requirements are contained in Awards or are specifically approved by the State Service Commissioner, for example educational qualifications or possession of a current drivers licence.

Applicants who do not satisfy the essential requirements necessary to undertake duties can not be selected for those duties. Selection panels must ensure that applicants satisfy any essential requirement contained in a statement of duties.
