(May 2007)
In addition to its normal teacher recruitment processes, each year the Department of Education, Tasmania offers quality teaching graduates from the University of Tasmania the opportunity to gain permanent employment as a teacher in the Tasmanian public education system through the Graduate Recruitment Program (Teachers).
Pre-service teachers who are currently enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor of Teaching, a Bachelor of Education or a Bachelor of Human Movement degree at the University of Tasmania are encouraged to apply for the Graduate Recruitment Program (Teachers).
Successful applicants will be chosen on the basis of outstanding academic results and/or outstanding performance during professional experience, particularly during their final year internship.
What Does the Graduate Recruitment Program (Teachers) Offer?
(October 2007)
Upon graduation, successful applicants will be placed in a graduate recruit teaching position with the Department of Education. Subject to completing a successful probationary year, they will be confirmed as permanent employees.
Graduate recruits will be paid one salary level in advance of that normally paid to similarly qualified graduate in their first year of employment. They will remain one salary level in advance of similarly qualified and experienced teachers until they reach the top of the base-grade teacher salary scale.
This benefit is in addition to any other payment or incentive that may be normally available to permanent teachers in the Department. Successful applicants may also qualify for relocation expenses.
This program targets vacancies in rural and remote areas but may also include urban vacancies that would not be filled by general advertisement or through transfer of permanent staff.

Selection Process
(October 2007)
Graduate recruits will be selected by the Department of Education on the basis of merit and the relative suitability of applicants to meet identified teacher staffing needs throughout the State.
The Department of Education will identify positions in schools as suitable for graduate recruits and advertise these in October each year. These will be advertised on the Department's web site and through the University and graduates will be invited to apply on the application form. Selection will be made on the basis of academic results, faculty referees, internship reports and interview. Selection panels may include representatives from the University and the Department.
Graduates who make multiple applications will be ranked in the selection process and will be offered the most suitable position taking into account their preference. Applicants are urged to only apply for a particular position if they are keen to accept that position.
It is intended to finalise the majority of positions by November each year, however other positions may be identified later in the year and subsequently filled through the same selection process.
All applicants will be notified of the outcome of the selection process. Graduates are also able to apply for specific permanent base-grade teaching positions when they are advertised through the Tasmanian State Service Notices (Gazette) and major newspapers in October each year.
