Each year the Department of Education (DoE), Tasmania offers teaching graduates the opportunity to gain permanent employment as a teacher in the Tasmanian public education system through the Graduate Recruitment Program (Teachers). Vacancies will be advertised on the Departments web site.
Applicants must be currently enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor of Teaching, a Bachelor of Education or equivalent.
Applicants must be eligible to be registered as teachers in Tasmania through the Teachers Registration Board (TRB).
This program targets vacancies in rural and remote areas but may also include vacancies in urban schools that would not be filled by general advertisement or through transfer of permanent staff.
Vacancies are advertised in September each year. Where possible vacancies will be advertised for a specific school. In some cases the specific school may not be known at the time the vacancy is advertised, in which case a local area or group of schools might be identified as the location for the vacancy.
All vacancies advertised in 2009 are located in the North and North West of Tasmania.
The North West includes the West Coast, Circular Head (Smithton), King Island and the Burnie –Devonport area.
The North includes Launceston, Deloraine, Cape Barren and Flinders Islands the East Coast and the North East (Scottsdale area).
What Does the Graduate Recruitment Program (Teachers) Offer?

Successful applicants are offered permanent employment as a teacher following graduation.
Following acceptance of this offer and the completion of a one year probationary period Graduate Recruits are confirmed as permanent employees within the Department of Education Tasmania.
Graduate Recruits will be paid one salary level above that normally paid to similarly qualified graduate in their first year of employment. They will remain one salary level above similarly qualified and experienced teachers until they reach the top of the base-grade teacher salary rates.
Starting salary for 4 year trained teachers is Band1 Level 5 (B1L5) $ 54,151.
Starting salary for 5 year trained teachers is Band1 Level 7 (B1L7) $ 59,872.
Isolated Location Incentives are available for teachers who are employed in any of the following schools:
Cape Barren Island, Flinders Island District High, King Island District High, Mountain Heights School, Redpa Primary, Rosebery District High School, Strahan Primary, Waratah Primary, Zeehan Primary.
The current rates are:
- $2146 upon beginning work;
- $2146 upon completing 3 years continuouswork in that location;
- $4297 upon completing 4 years continuouswork in that location;
- $4297 upon completing 5 years continuouswork in that location;
- $4297 upon completing 6 years continuouswork in that location.
District allowances also apply to the above schools. The amount varies depending on the category of the school and whether the teacher is a single person or has dependants.

Applications for the Graduate Recruitment Program (Teachers) must be made on the Graduate Recruitment Program (Teachers) Application Form [Word 90KB]. Applicants must nominate their preferences for graduate recruit vacancies, including preferred Learning Services and schools, on the Application Form. When applying for multiple vacancies, please list in order of preference.

Selection Process

Successful applicants will be selected by the Department of Education on the basis of excellent academic results and/or outstanding performance during professional experience, particularly during their final year placements. The selection panel will, as part of the merit selection process, consider faculty referee reports, reports from school placements and interview. The selection panel may include representatives from a variety of areas within the state education system.
Graduates who make multiple applications and are ranked in the selection process may be offered the most suitable vacancy taking into account their preference. Applicants are urged to only apply for a particular vacancy if they are keen to accept that placement.
It is intended to finalise the vacancies as soon as possible following the close of applications, however other vacancies may be identified later in the year and subsequently filled through the same selection process.
All applicants will be notified of the outcome of the selection process.
Graduates are also able to apply for specific permanent base-grade teaching vacancies which are not part of the Graduate Recruitment program when they are advertised through the Tasmanian State Service jobs web site Notices (Gazette) and major newspapers in October each year.
