Maths/Science Graduate Recruitment Program (Teachers)

(September 2006)

In addition to the regular Graduate Recruitment Program (Teachers) the Department of Education, Tasmania is offering quality Maths/Science teaching graduates from the University of Tasmania the opportunity to gain permanent employment as a teacher in the Tasmanian public education system through the Maths/Science Graduate Recruitment Program (Teachers).

Pre-service Maths/Science teachers who are currently enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor of Teaching, or a combined Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Teaching degree at the University of Tasmania are eligible to apply for the Maths/Science Graduate Recruitment Program (Teachers).

Successful applicants will be chosen on the basis of merit after undergoing an interview process and providing referees. Outstanding academic results and/or outstanding performance during professional experience, particularly during the final year internship will be highly regarded by the selection panels.

What does the Maths/Science Graduate Recruitment Program (Teachers) offer?

(October 2007)

Upon graduation, successful applicants will be placed in a Maths/Science teaching position with the Department of Education. Subject to completing a successful probationary year, they will be confirmed as permanent employees.

Under this program graduate recruits will be paid one salary level in advance of that normally paid to similarly qualified graduates in their first year of employment. They will remain one salary level in advance of similarly qualified and experienced teachers until they reach the top of the base-grade teacher salary scale.

In addition, successful applicants who are appointed to Level B and C will receive an allowance equivalent to the difference in salary between Band 1, Level 7 and Band 1, Level 8 in the first year of employment.  Those appointed to Level D schools will receive an allowance equivalent to the difference between Band 1, Level 7 and Band 1, Level 10 in the first year of employment.  These allowances will be paid for the term of the assignment (four years in Level B and C schools and three years in a Level D school).

Should a graduate recruit leave the position they were appointed to in a Level B, C or D school before the end of their assignment payment of the allowance will cease.

Level B, C and D schools are identified in the Teaching Service (Tasmanian Public Sector) Salaries and Conditions of Employment Agreement 2005 [PDF 1.38MB].

The salary levels will be paid in addition to any other payment or incentive that may be normally available to permanent teachers in the Department. Successful applicants may also qualify for relocation expenses.

These will be advertised on the Department's web site and through the University and graduates will be invited to apply on the application form. Selection will be made on the basis of academic results, faculty referees, internship reports and interview. Selection panels may include representatives from the University and the Department.

It is intended to finalise the majority of positions by early November each year, however other positions may be identified later in the year and subsequently advertised.

All applicants will be notified of the outcome of the selection process. Graduates are also able to apply for specific for specific permanent base-grade teaching vacancies when they are advertised through the Tasmanian State Service Notices (Gazette) in October each year.
