Department of Education Media Release

20 Jan 2012

The release of the NAPLAN Test Incidents Report shows Tasmanian schools conducted testing with a high standard of professionalism, Deputy Secretary, Early Years and Schools Liz Banks, said today.

“25,000 students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across 270 Government, Catholic and Independent schools in Tasmania sat approximately 100, 000 tests in literacy and numeracy,” she said.

“Only two minor incidents for Tasmania were recorded which represents a very low level of incidents given the number of tests involved.

“The incidents involved one school conducting a test on a day other than that stipulated, and 12 testing booklets going missing before a test.

“The low number of minor test incidents during Tasmanian testing should strengthen community confidence in the integrity of NAPLAN testing.”

Ms Banks said the incidents were only minor breaches of the NAPLAN test protocols, were not considered to be serious and did not involve cheating.

“The results of those students impacted by the minor breaches were reviewed and no evidence was found that incidents caused any unfair advantage or disadvantage.”
