I am pleased to present to the Tasmanian community the Department of Education Disability Action Plan for the period 2008 – 2010. The Plan gives strategic priority to actions underpinned by fundamental principles and goals for high quality service provision for people with a disability.

The principles recognise the rights of people with disabilities to experience and enjoy the same learning and lifestyle opportunities that all Tasmanians value. The principles and accompanying goals and actions emerged following consultation with the broader community.

The Plan identifies six key areas for improvement in service delivery, physical access, employment, staff awareness, communications strategies and consultation. Implementation will require concerted effort to address existing gaps and barriers, and will encompass our genuine commitment to provide inclusive, caring practices.

Outcomes will contribute to ongoing improvements to benefit people with disability throughout their life time. I encourage the Tasmanian community to support the adoption of the Department of Education Disability Action Plan.
