Programs and services to support young children with special needs

Programs can provide:

  • stimulating and developmentally appropriate activities and experiences
  • ideas to assist families at home
  • support and information for parents and caregivers
  • help to children to prepare for other learning environments

Home visiting

Early Childhood Intervention Service staff can visit your home to support you and your child's learning using everyday activities and routines.

Individual educational sessions

You and your baby or child can have an individual coaching session to support you in a programme specific to your child and family.  

Your family can choose this option for service delivery through the Individualised Family Support Plan (ISFP) process.

Therapy

You can have access to the services of a:

  • physiotherapist
  • occupational therapist
  • speech pathologist

Therapists attend programs and can also provide individual and/or family support. 

Group programs

You and your child can attend small group programs which offer coaching and support such as:

  • baby, toddler and transition to school groups
  • premature baby playgroups
  • groups catering for specific needs identified by families eg. toileting, sleeping, fine motor skills
  • autism specific programs

Support to community programs

If your child is attending a regular child care centre, we can assist the staff to ensure your child is included in all aspects of the program.

Transition to school

In the year before starting school we:

  • provide you with information about schooling options in your area
  • support you and your child in the transition to school process
  • assist the staff at Department of Education kindergartens to understand your priorities for your child

Resource library

Library resources are available to provide information on a wide range of topics for you and your family.
