Comalco Aluminium (Bell Bay) Limited

Comalco's Bell Bay smelter maintains an extensive community relations program. Their Community Assistance Scheme provides financial and in-kind support for a range of community activities and events including tours of the smelter.

Australian Model Solar Vehicle Challenge Tasmania

This is a national challenge designed to promote innovation and creativity through the construction of solar-powered cars and boats. It involves statewide and nationwide competitions between teams of students. It has been highly successful in encouraging students to develop skills in SET.

University of Tasmania, School of Engineering

The School of Engineering at the University of Tasmania is actively involved in a number of outreach activities which include the Science & Engineering Challenge, Engquest, and the Siemens Science Experience.

CSIRO Science Education Centre Tasmanian Division

The main role of the Centre is to run hands-on science programs for primary and secondary students throughout Tasmania. These programs are designed to achieve the three goals of CSIRO Education:

  1. To alert school students, their families and teachers of science to the vital contribution that research undertaken by CSIRO and other organizations makes to our community.
  2. To encourage students to participate in scientific activities, especially those related to the applications of science.
  3. To encourage students to take up careers in science.

Robotics Tasmania

Robotics Tasmania is a Special Interest Group of the Australian Computer Society, Tasmanian Branch, that aims to encourage and support interest and activities in robotics and artificial intelligence. In support of robotics education, Robotics Tasmania manages the state's annual Robocup Junior competition for primary and secondary school students.

Department of Education (Tasmania) Centre for Extended Learning Opportunities (CELO)

CELO initiatives include supporting schools and clusters to develop SET based learning sequences and programs: e.g.

  • Forensics Camps
  • Lego Mindstorms-based activities
  • After school programs for students in conjunction with the University of Tasmania, e.g. 'Plants Alive', a 15 week 'hands on' laboratory based program for students in grades 5 and 6
  • Holiday programs for students (K-10) as the Statewide KidZED Program, with a substantial section of SET programs offered as 1/2 and full day scientific inquiries.

Clarendon Vale Primary School will trial activities within several classes, including teacher professional development in SET content areas and assessment of student engagement. Teachers will provide feedback on practical activities and develop learning sequences.

Exeter High School

Exeter High School will trial the kits in grades 7 to 10 in Science classes, evaluating suitability for the target audience and the Tasmanian Curriculum and providing feedback in relation to both.

Hobart College

This ASISTM project will enable Hobart College to continue its support of high school science students and college pre-engineering students. College staff will be able to provide technical assistance to high school teachers while at the same time benefiting from the experience of other partners with particular specialties in technology.

Huonville High School will trial activities involving the use of robotics within the classroom. This will include teacher professional development in SET content areas as well as assessment of student engagement. Teachers will provide feedback on practical activities and develop learning sequences.

Rokeby Primary School

Rokeby Primary School will trial activities within several classes. This will include teacher professional development in SET content areas and assessment of student engagement. Teachers will provide feedback on practical activities and develop learning sequences.

Rokeby High School

Rokeby High School will trial the learning sequences and kits assessing the effectiveness of different teaching styles and methods. Rokeby High will also provide its two feeder primary schools with any additional resources that are required for implementation of a hands-on approach. Links will be established and developed with the local college (Rosny) with the aim of introducing an engineering-based course at senior secondary level.

Taroona High School

Taroona High School will trial the kits in a new science short course aimed at engaging the interest of gifted and talented students, motivating them to develop their skills in scientific inquiry processes. This will include writing the course, using and evaluating the units of work that will have been written within the project, and evaluating student outcomes.
