Trip of a lifetime for six Tasmanian students Six Tasmanian students will have the unforgettable experience of visiting Gallipoli on Anzac Day next year after winning the Frank MacDonald Memorial Prize.
Premier and Minister for Education and Skills, David Bartlett, today announced the winners of the 2009 prize which gives students the chance to visit important World War 1 landmarks in Europe.
“The Frank MacDonald Memorial Prize honours Tasmania’s World War 1 veteran, Frank MacDonald who died in 2003 at the age of 107,” Mr Bartlett said.
“Winners visit significant wartime sites in Belgium, France and Turkey including Gallipoli.
“This competition is a fantastic opportunity for our students to explore history in a proactive and exciting way.
“For many years to come, it will provide an important catalyst for all Tasmanian students to reflect on how we can continue to keep the Anzac spirit alive.”
Mr Bartlett said that in this year’s competition, students had a choice of two questions:
1. World War 1 had devastating long term as well as short term effects on Tasmanian society. Why then do we commemorate our participation in this conflict?
2. Frank MacDonald MM, like all Australians who fought, was an army volunteer in World War 1 and recalls what he had to go through to enlist. Why did Tasmanians go to such lengths to volunteer for a war far away from home during World War 1?
Students were able to respond to the topic in either essay format or audio-visual/ICT format.
“164 students from 28 Government and non-Government schools throughout the State entered the competition and 54 entries were short-listed by school-based committees,” Mr Bartlett said.
“I’d like to congratulate the 12 finalists and six winners on their outstanding entries.”
The annual prize is sponsored by the State Government with support from the Returned Services League. Representing the State Parliament on the trip will be Legislative Council President Sue Smith.
