What is Move Well Eat Well?

Move Well Eat Well is a statewide initiative funded under the Australian Better Health Initiative (ABHI) and managed by the Departments of Health and Human Services and Education.

Many Tasmanian primary schools have started working to achieve recognition as a Move Well Eat Well Award School.

What is the Award Program?

Move Well Eat Well provides a comprehensive, yet simple guide, on how to create a healthier environment for children by promoting six healthy messages: Tap into Water Every Day; Plant Fruit & Veg in Your Lunchbox; Limit 'Occasional' Foods; Move, Play and Go; Turn Off Switch to Play; and Stride and Ride.

Water

Tap into Water Every Day - and limit sweet drinks - aims to increase water consumption and reduce the consumption of sweet drinks.

Drinking water instead of sweet drinks provides hydration for concentration and learning and promotes healthy teeth.

Plant Fruit and Veg in Your Lunch Box - aims to increase consumption of fruit and vegetables.

Fruit and vegetables provide essential nutrients for healthy eyes, skin and hair and protect against many diseases.

OccasionalFood

Limit 'Occasional' Foods - targets soft drinks, chips, chocolates, and lollies - aims to decrease consumption of high-energy foods and drinks.

Less occasional foods means children fill up on nutritious foods and drinks required for growth and lifelong health.

Play

Move, Play and Go Every Day - aims to increase active play and physical activity.

Physical activity promotes a longer healthier life. Its many benefits include increased fitness, motor skills and confidence.

Turn Off, Switch to Play - aims to decrease screen time (e.g. television, electronic games and computers) and increase active play.

Less screen time means more time for children to develop physical, social and emotional skills through active play.

How can I support my school to become a Move Well Eat Well Award School?

If your child's school is a Move Well Eat Member, they are on the way to promoting healthy eating and physical activity. Here¿s how you can help:
  • Let the Principal or teachers know you support their efforts
  • Offer to help plan healthy eating or physical activity activities
  • Talk to your School Association or P&F meeting about Move Well Eat Well. Click here for a handout to help you
  • Talk to other parents about the benefits of making healthy eating and physical activity positive, normal and easy for children
  • Share this poster with others: Move Well Eat Well poster.
  • Use time at a regular parents' meeting to generate ideas to support the school achieve each criteria.
  • Look at the areas where your school is already achieving success. It may be worth celebrating how far you have come already.
  • Offer to join the school's Move Well Eat Well Action Team.
  • Use occasions where parents are helping out, to reinforce the key messages, e.g. make water available for parent volunteers, have a healthy snack for parents groups, encourage parents to walk to schools events, when possible and practical, to walk to schools events.
  • Talk to schools already involving parents in a Walking Bus and see if it could suit your school's needs
  • Contact the Community Nutrition Unit to get ideas for healthy fundraising (ph 6222 7222) and talk to other parents about how you might introduce them.
