Further Education

Industry and Employers

There will be no change to the way in which industry accesses training through the Tasmanian Skills Institute or Polytechnic for 2012 or 2013.

TasTAFE will provide continuity for training for industry, once it is established.

Information for employers and industry:

Will there be a clear separation between policy and purchasing of VET and the delivery of VET in Tasmania?

Yes.  There will be a clear separation of the Department as purchaser from TasTAFE as the provider.  This governance arrangement is not unique to Tasmania.

Commonly around the nation, VET policy, strategy and purchasing in jurisdictions are conducted by government departments.  Each jurisdiction approaches this government department responsibility with slight variation, but in each case, the public provider of VET operates independently of the government department responsible for purchasing.

Industry advice and engagement is important, and in the case of VET delivery, it assists to ensure skills match employer requirements.  The department will work with Skills Tasmania to discuss how best to structure the provision of industry advice under the new arrangements.

There have also been preliminary discussions between the Secretaries of the Department of Education and the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and the Arts (DEDTA) about a collaborative approach to capturing industry advice and these arrangements will be formalised.

The TasTAFE Board will include people from industry.
