Premier's Reading Challenge 2008

Premier's Reading Challenge 2008

21 April to 30 September

For students

A message from the Premier

This is the challenge I’m setting for every Tasmanian student in Grades 1-6 – to read 20 books by 30 September 2008.

Do you think you can do it?

If you accept the Challenge and read 10 books by 30 June 2008 you will go into the draw to win an iPod and audio book voucher. If you complete the Challenge, you’ll receive a personalised certificate and a chance to join me at an official celebration.

This is not a competition, it’s a challenge, and all readers, at all levels, can take part – all you have to do is read 20 books over the next five months. That’s only one book a week.

If you register for the Challenge your school will get $10 to buy library books.

I challenge you to read, keep reading and, above all, to have some fun. Let’s see how many young Tasmanians can complete the Challenge!

Paul Lennon
Premier of Tasmania

Getting started

  1. Tell your teacher you have accepted the Challenge
Your school will then register for the Challenge

  2. Start reading
The Challenge is to read 20 books - at least 15 books must be from the Challenge Booklist and five can be of your own choice. That’s only one book per week

Many of the books are available through your school library or the State Library of Tasmania (search the library catalogue at www.statelibrary.tas.gov.au)

  3. Fill in your Reading Log
Get an adult to sign the log each time you finish a book

Have fun and be rewarded

  • Read 10 books and you’ll receive a sticker and go into the draw to win an iPod and audio book voucher

  • Read 20 books and you’ll receive a certificate and go into the draw to attend a celebration with the Premier

Hints for reading

  1. Your teachers and librarians can help you choose books for your age and interest from the Challenge Booklist, which features more than 6,000 books

  2. If you are just beginning to read you can share reading with an adult

  3. The books you read for the Premier’s Reading Challenge can also be counted towards the MS Readathon in June

Completing the Challenge

  1. Once you’ve read 20 books, return your Reading Log to your teacher by 30 September 2008

  2. You’ll receive your official Challenge certificate in third term
