Around 3 to 6 months

Vision and Fine Movements

  • Can focus on moving objects and follow them with eyes.
  • Forgets about objects that are moved away from line of sight.
  • Explores things by putting them in the mouth.
  • Grasps and plays with small objects.
  • Moves objects from one hand to another.
  • Can bang together two blocks for other objects

Large Movements

  • Rolls from back to front.
  • Can lift chest and abdomen from surface, supporting weight with hands.
  • Plays with own hands and feet.
  • Can sit when held.
  • Bounces when held in a standing position.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • Friendly with strangers, but may show slight anxiety when mother or primary care-giver is out of sight.
  • Responds differently to different tones of mother's voice, for example, cross, pleased.
  • Imitates familiar actions, for example, waving, clapping.
  • Knows and responds to familiar faces.
  • Helps to hold the bottle when drinking.

Listening, Speaking and Understanding

  • Begins to imitate sounds.
  • Babbles and 'sings' using sounds such as ma, da, mu ...
  • Has different cries to express, hunger, anger and pain.
  • Laughs and squeals with delight.
  • Shakes rattle deliberately to make sound.

Seek advice if a child

  • Does not smile in response to other people's smiles.
  • Does not focus on a moving object and follow it with eyes.
  • Does not reach for objects or familiar persons.
  • Does not turn head to locate a sound.
