National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2008

In May 2008 and in future years, all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Australia will participate in national tests that will assess their performance in literacy and numeracy.

Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students in Tasmania have been participating in literacy and numeracy tests for a number of years, so they will be familiar with the test formats and the type of questions they have to answer.

The main difference is that all students across Australia will be doing the same tests on the same days.

Students will be tested in numeracy, reading, writing and language conventions which includes spelling, punctuation and grammar.

The national tests will provide information on how students are progressing against national benchmarks (minimum standards) and support improvements in teaching and learning.

Students will receive an individual report that shows their results in relation to the national average and the national benchmarks. The report will also give a comparison of the student’s performance against all other Australian students in their year level.
