Civics and Citizenship Education/Discovering Democracy

Discovering Democracy was a Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) funded civics and citizenship education project. It aims to assist students to understand the relevance of political and legal systems to everyday life, and develop capacities to participate as informed, reflective and active citizens in their civic communities.

The project has funded:

• publication of an extensive range of print and electronic curriculum resources, including 18 primary and secondary teaching units
• the delivery of professional development for Tasmanian teachers and schools
• national activities, including Celebrating Democracy Week and teacher, school and student awards.

During 2004 national assessment in civics and citizenship education was undertaken. This involved a national sample survey of students in Years 6 and 10.
