Students choose one of three quizzes about the custom of ‘oleh-oleh’ and gift-giving in Indonesia, and explore an Indonesian market to find the answers to the quiz questions. Students talk to people in the market to find out about gift-giving customs in Indonesia, and see what’s for sale on three different stalls. Information about all the goods on sale is presented through fact files. As students successfully answer the quiz questions, they find clues to a gift that would be suitable for oleh-oleh.
Students are encouraged to reflect on their own family and national 'customs' around gift-giving and how these compare with those of Indonesia.
Although the setting is similar to that in Mari kita makan, this is a completely separate learning object with some different stalls and a different purpose.
This learning object is designed for advanced students in Year 8/9. All spoken text is accompanied by native-speaker sound and English rollover help is provided for more difficult words.
