In planning this learning object, a number of young people from all over Indonesia were asked the question, What do you see as being the cultural icons of Indonesia? What represents Indonesia for you?

Their suggestions were diverse, some being very regional or personal, with a number of responses that were similar. This learning object brings seven of those responses together in the scenario of a class display.

The display, Pameran, has been sent from Indonesia to an Australian school for presentation in the school hall. Each display describes a cultural icon and contains the following ‘items’:
• title
• image/s with captions
• map showing location, with caption
• information about that icon
• photo of the Indonesian student who suggested the icon
• bio-data on that student
• notes explaining why that icon was chosen
• a task sheet.

Extra multimedia information is available for some icons.

Students repair the jumbled displays and complete the tasks. In order to do this students will need further information from the accompanying ‘search engine’, Pintu Indonesia. Pintu Indonesia is a fully searchable resource containing images, text and multimedia on topics relevant to Pameran. It is accessible via the image of a laptop at each display.

Pameran is a catalyst for discussion and reflection on what constitutes a cultural icon in Indonesia and in Australia, as well as a source of information on Indonesian geography, environment, arts and more. Each display provides a model for Australian students to present a cultural icon of their own.

Pameran was designed for Year 8 students with some prior experience with Indonesian. Some text is accompanied by native-speaker sound and English rollover help is provided for more difficult words.
