Students using this learning object will learn about traditional Wayang Kulit (shadow puppet) performances and develop their Indonesian language skills through creating a digital shadow puppet play. This learning objectfocuses on shadow puppet plays as social occasions and important vehicles for traditional story telling in Java and Bali. It is intended as inspiration for working together to script and create shadow puppet plays in the classroom as well.

There are two main sections. In 'Tentang wayang kulit', students explore the audience view of a wayang kulit performance from behind and in front of the screen. They find out about different elements of wayang kulit and the importance of wayang kulit in Javanese and Balinese culture. They also view a short video of a real shadow puppet performance.

In 'Sandiwaramu', students build a list of actions that a monkey shadow puppet can perform, then create their own shadow puppet play in three scenes. This involves them in choosing settings, 'props' and actions for each scene, and writing a short story to accompany the play.

Where appropriate, text is accompanied by native-speaker sound and English rollover help is provided for more difficult words.

This learning object is suitable for students in years 5 to 8 with less advanced Indonesian.
