The following languages are currently taught in Community Language Schools in Tasmania:
- Hmong
- Korean
- Persian
- Serbian
- Polish
- Greek
- Italian
- Filipino
- Chinese [Mandarin and Cantonese]
The Hindi School operates for adults only.
All schools are able to access DoE officers for curriculum advice and the copying of materials and some curriculum materials are available to schools at no cost.
Community language programs have benefited students in providing literacy in their first language for some participants and in maintaining linguistic skills for all. Students who have gained literacy skills in their first language have demonstrated an increased rate of learning English.
The students at some of the above schools have gained pre-tertiary assessment through the Tasmanian Secondary Assessment Board (TASSAB).
For further information concerning any of the Community Language Schools, contact Danielle Bresnehan, Principal Curriculum Officer (English as a Second Language).
