Overview:
The Asian Languages Professional Learning Project (ALPLP) was an initiative of the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) and funded through the Australian Government Quality Teacher Program (AGQTP).
This national Project was delivered in two Phases and managed by the Asia Education Foundation in partnership with the AFMLTA.
Phase 1 was implemented in mid 2004 and focussed on updating Asian languages methodology with a particular emphasis on intercultural language learning. In Tasmania, teachers of European languages were supported by the Department of Education to join the Project. Thirty-five teachers participated from all jurisdictions and sectors.
Evidence from Phase 1 showed that the pedagogy of intercultural language learning and teaching aligns and supports the Essential Learnings Frameworks.

School teams in Phase 2 generally included the LOTE teacher who attended Phase 1, a senior staff member and other teachers. They took part in a two day professional development program focussing on intercultural understanding and links across the curriculum, particularly literacy, vocational education and ICT. They then collaboratively planned a whole-of-school investigation, which was shared in term 1, 2005.
