Do I have an accent?

This learning sequence examined and built students’ awareness of different cultures outside their known experiences. Students investigated, compared and contrasted different cultures. They were provided with the opportunity to develop understanding about the diversity of people and cultures.

Students brainstormed in small groups what it meant to be an “Aussie”. In their journals they drew a “typical Aussie” with annotated comments, and made a poster about how the media portrays Australia and Australians. Students compiled a CD or play list of songs that explore or reflect Australian culture, explaining their choices. They also designed a CD cover to represent the music they had chosen.

Analysing photos showing couples or families from the 1920s to the 1990s, students identified the people, when they lived, and reflected on what life might have been like for them.

In groups, students investigated a non-English speaking country of their choice.

They discussed the importance of communication in any language – including the use of body language and the close links between language and culture.
