Sue Wyatt (SOSE); Christine Moore (LOTE); 25 teachers on the high school site
This learning sequence focused on the question: What are, and why are there differences between and among cultures in aspects such as food, customs, cultural practices, faiths, language and texts? Drawing upon interest in cultural diversity amongst students and teachers, students investigated different ways to celebrate cultural diversity as part of a multicultural festival.
The intention of the multicultural festival was for students to discover how people live in other parts of the world and learn some basic phrases of their languages. Students chose three sessions for each day with the length varying from one to one and a quarter hours. The range of cultural activities was extensive. Teachers were encouraged to offer hands-on activities as well as language learning, video viewing and discussions.
