2.2 K-10/12 - District High School libraries
There are 26 District High Schools in Tasmania and these provide for students from Kindergarten to year 10. Some schools also offer a program which encompasses kindergarten to year 12.
The resource needs for the school libraries serving these district high schools can be very extensive as the students range from pre-school students to year 10/12 and the teachers require support resources to meet the training and learning needs of the whole student body. The school library must support the teaching and management requirements associated with the entire school program.
School library staff working in the district high school must have an understanding of all the current curriculum developments from kindergarten to year 10/12. District high school libraries are also used for many different forms of teaching and learning and it is important that consideration is given in the planning of the library to the different areas required for the different learning and teaching styles. The problems of disparate use of the library are intensified in the district high school library because of the greater range in the ages of the students. Noise especially can be a problem when there are two groups of learners in the library - senior school students involved in quiet research and a group of primary students exploring the Internet together for example.
Careful consideration must be given by the district high school library staff to ensure the library is a welcoming and accommodating environment for the whole range of clients.
