Metadata is data about data. The catalogue record you create for the TALIS system is a type of metadata. Metadata helps people searching for electronic information to find what they are seeking more efficiently by providing a structured way of describing electronic resources.
Learning objects are the building blocks of multimedia online learning resources, which are being developed as part of the Learning Federation project to enable schools to deliver modules through a flexible mode. Sets of metadata elements that enable the management, evaluation and retrieval of learning objects have been developed. Government teachers may access the Learning Federation Objects via the eCentre for Teachers.
When you are creating the school library website with links to your electronic resources, you usually create embedded metadata automatically when you use a web authoring tool such as Microsoft FrontPage. Metadata needs to be updated whenever the URL, in this case your school library's website, changes.
Metadata can be held separately from the resource in a repository. This repository store can only be searched from a specific entry point. For example, to search the metadata held in the repository for the Department of Education web site, the user must search using the web page search engine and/or browse facilities.
