4.3 Creating a school library web site

Part of promoting the services of your school library involves making your library visible in the wider school context. The school library must follow the school's policy on the interaction between the school's Intranet site and Internet presence. Some schools use the Internet site to provide address and other contact details only, with their Intranet being used for the business of the school. Check with the school Principal to determine your school's policy.

In cases where the school's policy is to have a substantial Internet presence it is vital that a clear link to the school library is established on the homepage. Examine the school homepages at the following sites and note the position of the library hyperlink. In most cases it is an obvious html link and ensures that the library's resources are easily located and retrieved.

Follow the links to the school library websites at the above sites to gain some tips for designing your own home page.

When school libraries have an Internet presence the sharing of resources, such as WebQuests, online tutorials, good Internet sites, etc. is facilitated.

Most schools have excellent Intranets for use within the school, but by establishing an Internet presence; school libraries can provide for remote users and enhance the delivery of flexible learning and teaching.

Some links you may like to include on your website are:

  • Mission statement for the school library
  • Collection development policy
  • Circulation guidelines
  • Statement on copyright and Intellectual property
  • Introduction to the staff in the library
  • Information literacy statement
  • Opening hours
  • Display of the month
  • What's new
  • Good/useful websites
  • Request for acquisition form
  • Links to useful online tutorials
  • Links to useful resources such as search engines, the TALIS catalogue.
