4.7 Integration of information and communication technology teaching skills (ICTs)
Information and communication technologies should be embedded into every library lesson plan, as they should be embedded throughout the curriculum. Whether training students at kindergarten level or year 12, the training should be exciting, dynamic and involve the use of current technologies. Students need to become information literate by using and exploring a number of ICTs.
It is essential that school libraries take a leading role. Library staff should be proactive in devising programs for both staff and students that encompass ICT skills.
The teacher-librarian and other library staff may be required to deliver library training in the use of equipment such as digital cameras, scanners, printers and laptops. They may also train students and or teaching staff in the use of particular software applications like Adobe PhotoShop, Power Point and FrontPage. They may also wish to be involved in the delivery of Internet researching skills.
Ascertain teaching staff needs for training in the use of particular equipment or software. A good way of doing this is to create and distribute a library survey. This has the added benefit of alerting teaching staff to the resources that may be available in the library. The survey must be quick and easy for staff to complete.
