A school library's mission is to have sufficient resources to support the learning and informational needs of both students and staff. Hence, there should be minimal need of inter-library loans as all material should be available from the school library.
However, when budgets are limited, resources often suffer, so a good way of supplementing the library's collection is to use the resources of other libraries. Because Tasmania has a shared catalogue database, it is easy for TALIS schools to see the holdings at other school libraries. Other school libraries may be reluctant to lend resources as they will be delivering to the same curriculum as your school, however it is a good idea to network with nearby library staff to explore possibilities. Policy for dealing with ILL requests should be included in library policy documents - some issues to consider are:
- Which items will be made available for ILL - books only?, videos/DVDs? CDROMs?, periodicals? etc.
- Which items will not be made available for loan?
- Will items in satellite collections be available for ILL?
- Who pays for postage?
- Are there any other methods for delivery apart from post?
- Will items be loaned within a certain geographical area or throughout Tasmania?
- Will charges for overdue ILLs be made?
- Who will be enrolled as the responsible borrower?
When borrowing items through ILL it is important to respect the lending library's ILL guidelines.
