It is important to have a staff member available at all times to assist with ESL student pastoral care needs. The students need to be clear about who will assist and where they can be found. At secondary and college levels, support and assistance from a network of key, well-chosen students will also help to make the schooling experience successful.
Promoting links between the school and home can be of great benefit to students particularly if they are geographically or ethnically isolated or if there is only one ESL student at the school / college. Students should be encouraged to participate in social, cultural and/or sporting activities to promote friendships.
The Community Networks page provides contact details and further information for service providers working in this area, including the Migrant Resource Centre, the Phoenix Centre and government agencies, such as the Housing Department and Centrelink.
