Mark contrasts the socially connected social world of young people with the world they encounter in school, where connectivity is often replaced with other functions.

He discusses the idea that neither the traditional approach nor a fully contemporary approach is the "right way". He does however point out that some students feel that schools are torturing the connectivity out of them, and we don't want schools to be completely independent of the world.
