Students with disabilities

The vast majority of students with disabilities are educated in their local schools alongside their age peers while being provided with curriculum and support to meet their particular learning needs. If attendance at a regular school is considered by families not to be a suitable option, students may be eligible to attend a special school.

Support for students with particular learning needs is provided by teams of professionals that include teacher learning support leaders, support teachers, guidance officers, speech and language pathologists and social workers.

The Manager, Students with Disabilities Support and the Principal Education Officer Students with Disabilities have responsibility for

  • managing the moderation process whereby students with the most severe levels of disability and the highest support needs are identified and placed on the  Register of Students with Severe Disabilities;
  • managing processes for equitable allocation of special education resources;
  • management of targeted programs to support students with disabilities, for example, the Transport Assistance Program for Students with Disabilities, Information and Comunication Technology for Students with Disabilities, and Minor Works to Support the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities in Regular Schools;
  • administration of funding from the Commonwealth Targeted Programs, Non-government Centre Support Program;
  • interagency collaboration as related to students with disabilities;
  • developing policy, guidelines and standards;
  • strategic planning; and
  • monitoring outcomes for students with disabilities, as appropriate.
  • supporting development and implementation of inclusive curriculum for students with disabilities;
  • supporting individual education planning for students with disabilities;
