This information is designed to assist teachers and schools in supporting students with diverse gender identities. It describes concepts related to gender diversity and includes policy information, curriculum ideas, and a glossary of key terms.

Sexuality and gender are a fundamental part of a person's identity. During the past decade, discussion and controversy surrounding sexuality, relationship and gender issues have become increasingly common in society and education. The Department of Education is strongly committed to policies and practices that build understanding of gender diversity. This is being undertaken by:

  • addressing gender issues in the curriculum
  • questioning personal and social expectations of gender identity and behaviour
  • contesting claims that human potential is determined by gender status, and
  • challenging the discrimination and harassment experienced by all people but particularly those who do not conform to traditional gender stereotypes.
