Although the context is British, this book gives good ideas and useful activities to increase understanding of racism, build self respect and an appreciation of difference and diversity.

Babakiueria. Sydney, ABC, 1986. A humorous satire that reverses the roles, imagining what it would be like if a fleet arrived to try and settle an area inhabited by white natives. Excellent discussion starter as it promotes an awareness of the injustices that have been endured by black Australians. 30 mins. V1339 A

Because They're Black. KSPSTV, distributed by Marcom Projects, Kensington Gardens, SA, 1984 This video deals with the discrimination against Aborigines in high school. It includes the views of students, parents and teachers. 45 mins.

Blue Eyed. Marcom Projects, Loganholme, QLD, 1998. Training kit on discrimination and prejudice for use in an Australian context.

Bronwyn and Yaffa. National Film Board of Canada, Montreal, Quebec, 1996. Two young adults who have experienced racism reach out to the community to promote tolerance. They come to understand what attracts some people to extremist movements. Highly recommended for senior secondary, secondary SOSE students. 27 mins.

Countering Racism. Department for Education and Children's Services, Adelaide, 1997. Looks at the issue of racism in schools and uses real life accounts to show what racism looks like, sounds like and feels like for those subjected to it. It shows how cultural inclusivity programs support anti-racism measures, and highlights anti-racism curriculum programs, showing practical work done in classrooms. 37 mins. V4776

Making Connections -Breaking Racism. Northern Territory Department of Education, Darwin, NT, 1996.

Playing Fair. National Film Board of Canada, Canada, 1991. A series of four dramas (about 14 mins) for 7-12 year olds. Follow up activities are provided on jackets. Highly recommended and discussion is enhanced by the context being removed from the immediate Australian context.

  • Carol's Mirror. Carol wants to play the lead in Snow White but Carol is not white. Challenges the use of Eurocentric materials.
  • Mela's Lunch. Differences in skin colour and country of origin need not be obstacles to friendship and self esteem.
  • Hey Kelly. While playing a game, Robert calls Kelly a racist name and a fight ensues. Focuses on effects of name calling.
  • Walker. Walker is a foster child whose only playmate is a dog. Challenges racist attitudes and stereotypes.

Racism in Australia. Video Education Australasia, Bendigo, VIC, 1996. The video examines various aspects of racism and race relations in Australia as seen through the eyes of a variety of commentators including students from a range of backgrounds. The program starts with an examination of relations between the first white settlers to Australia and the Aboriginal people. It follows the effects of migration from gold rush times to the present day, considers what the term 'multiculturalism' means and explores the ways that we can respond to racist behaviour.
