Considerations for developing documentation

It is not possible to have one policy or form that suits every school. But it is possible to take an example document and tailor it to the needs of your school, thinking about the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of this policy or form?
  • What am I trying to achieve by developing it?

Policies and forms are important, but merely having them in place is not enough. It is important to discuss and review them with staff and students and where appropriate, your parent community. For example an Internet Acceptable Use Policy should be discussed at least once a year, so that everyone in the school is aware of the policy and its implications.

Reminders could be given to students at the beginning of every term, or the policy could be promoted in the school newsletter or discussed at school assembly. Access to the school network is a privilege not a right and building a culture around acceptable behaviour for emerging technology is what is important.
