Evaluation in the Swimming and Water Safety Program represents a 'snapshot' of a child's achievement at the time of evaluation based on the minimum requirements to achieve each skill.
The 'Record of Development' card is the personal record of an individuals achievement. School records are maintained on the Departmental Official Result Record Sheets which are to be completed by the swimming teachers at the conclusion of each campaign and forwarded to the State Coordinator.
The following page links contain more detailed criteria information
At Risk
Children who are unable to meet the minimum requirements to achieve 10 metres underarm [QuickTime 954KB] are considered to be 'at risk' when near an aquatic environment. It is desirable that these children receive extra tuition to assist their catch-up of swimming development.

Recognized or Efficient Technique
An important aim of the Swimming and Water Safety Program is to develop each child's stroke efficiency to ensure they grow in confidence and safety. At the completion of twenty lessons for grades three and four, it is desirable that students are swimming with recognized technique, 50 meters Freestyle, Backstroke and Survival Backstroke. Teachers need to familiarize themselves with the minimum requirements for each stroke (Stroke Development) to evaluate recognized or efficient technique.
Use of Goggles
One of the basic aims of this program is to fully adjust each child to the water. Consistent with this aim is that a swimmer be comfortable opening eyes underwater, therefore it is desirable that swimmers are encouraged to practice skills without the aid of swimming goggles.
