Government primary and high schools are located in designated geographical areas called home areas. Your child is entitled to attend the local school in the home area in which you live. To find out which school(s) are in your home area contact your Learning Services office.

If you have a reason for wishing to enrol your child in a school out of your home area, you should first discuss with your local school about how the particular needs of your child might be met. Applications for out of area enrolments are considered based on the reasons for the request, and whether or not the school has a place available. Children living in the school’s home area are always given first preference. Contact your Learning Services office for more information and assistance.

If you live in a shared home area that has more than one school to choose from, you are guaranteed an enrolment in one of those schools. Your first preference may not be accepted if that school is already full.

High schools draw their enrolments from nearby primary schools. For information on associated schools, see the list of primary and associated high schools.

For more information about school locations, see Find a school.

Distance Education

Distance Education Tasmania provides educational programs for students from Kindergarten to Year 10 who meet specific enrolment criteria that include:

  • Isolation
Where a student is geographically isolated and unable to reach a government school by normal transport.
  • Medical advice
Where written medical advice is provided that attendance at school is inadvisable or where a student has a disability and needs special support.
  • Pregnancy
Where a student is pregnant. Such enrolments may be extended to the post-natal period.
  • Travel
Where a student is involved in constant travel away from home and unable to attend a local school regularly. This includes the children of itinerant workers and the children of Tasmanian residents who are working in inaccessible areas.
  • Exceptional circumstances
Where the Department of Education determines that enrolment in distance education is a reasonable alternative to mainstream schooling.

Students undertake a program that is designed for their individual needs and circumstances by distance education teachers. Parents and carers play an important role in the learning program by providing supervision, support and encouragement to the student, and by working closely with teachers.

The teaching program is delivered by post, computer and telephone. The school is able to provide each student with a computer and internet subsidies to enable full participate in online classrooms and other activities.
